Latin Language 4103-LAC12z
The main aim of the course is awakening of general linguistic awareness (with special emphasis on German), so that in the future a student would be open to the perception of the presence of the classical vocabulary in any European language; the course is also aimed at training students to use proficiently the Latin-Polish dictionary.
The course consists on: learning of the Greek alphabet; learning of Greek and Latin words and concepts that constitute European linguistic and intellectual heritage (with special emphasis on German, English and Polish language); learning of Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes which form the vocabulary of European languages; learning of five Latin declinations; learning of the significance of indicativus, imperativus and infinitivus praesentis activi forms of Latin four conjugations; translation of sentences from Latin into Polish using the Polish-Latin dictionary.

Learning outcomes
In the end of the course the student will be able to:
-explain the problems of the development of Latin language over the centuries and characterise its innfluence on the Romance languages
-define the extent of the Latin vocabulary and the elements of grammar and syntax in Germanic (German and English) and Romance languages
-identfy Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes and word-roots in German and English/French vocabulary
-knows how to read and transcribe the words from Greek into Latin alphabet (and the other way round) and explain the meaning of some exemplary Ancient Greek words which exist in the linguistic consciousness of every European man
-expalin the meaning of many of foreign words in Polish
-knows how to make use of the elementary Latin instrumantarium, i.e. the dictionary and the declination and conjugation tabels
-analizes the grammar structures and translates with the help of dictionary Latin phrases, proverbs, quotes and sentences.
