The seminar is intended for first- and second-year students of the Mediterranean Civilization postgraduate course, Modern Greek specialization, but is open to all.

Prerequisites (description)

1. knowledge of New Greek on the III (G) level. Knowledge of New Greek history and literature on the level required to pass the exam after year three of the bachelor’s course (Introduction to the history and literature of Modern Greece).

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes:
KNOWLEDGE:
- problems and methods in the work of a researcher of European drama;
- the history of drama in modern Greece;
- the greatest 19th- and 20th-century output of Greek playwrights;
- basic knowledge on the impact of world drama on Greek playwrights;
- being able to list the greatest modern Greek playwrights.

SKILLS:
- retrieving, selecting, critically evaluating data needed to write a paper;
- analysing and interpreting excerpts from plays;
- noticing elements of the ancient tradition in modern Greek drama;
- identifying elements of native traditions (Greek customs, the Orthodox faith, local differences, elements of dialects, etc.) and seeing the universalism of the problems presented in plays, especially social problems;
- preparing and presenting one’s own interpretation of selected plays;
- critically evaluating academic research, producing correct reasoning (formulating a hypothesis and justifying it) in an oral presentation and in writing.

SOCIAL COMPETENCES:
- developing an awareness of one’s limited knowledge and the need for continual learning;
- being able to work individually and in a group and to present results in an oral presentation;
- organizing one’s own work (related to preparing the thesis).

Assessment criteria

Credits at the end of the course; working in groups and individual active participation in classes; unassisted presentations.
