Latin - intermediate group 4018-LEK-L1
The classes aim to teach students to understand simple Latin texts by classical authors, show them the huge impact of Latin on contemporary languages (especially the Romance languages), and expand their knowledge on the history and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. The classes constitute stage two out of three in elementary learning of Latin.
I. During the classes students will expand their knowledge of Latin inflection and syntax as well as increasing the vocabulary needed for further linguistic studies, and will expand their knowledge on the history and culture of ancient Greece and Rome.
II. Planned grammatical material:
- supinum, participium perfecti passivi, participium futuri activi,
- indicativus perfecti, plusquamperfecti, futuri II passivi, infinitivus perfecti passivi, futuri activi and passivi
- verba deponentia
- the ACI structure (perfectum passivi, futurum activi and passivi)
- ablativus absolutus
- coniugatio periphrastica passiva
- coniugatio periphrastica activa
- the NCI structure in all the tenses and both voices
- the functions of the cases: dativus auctoris, ablativus instrumenti, ablativus rei efficientis
- pronouns (indicative continued, indefinite), pronominal adjectives
- syntax of place names
- geographical names
- reading Latin texts appropriate for the students’ skills

Knowledge:
- in-depth knowledge on the structures and vocabulary of ancient Latin
Skills:
- conducting a comparative analysis of selected Latin and Polish grammatical phenomena
- translating simple source texts from Latin to Polish
Social competences:
- being able to work in a team and assume different roles within it; elementary organizational skills
Assessment criteria
Students’ active participation in classes may (or may not) be rewarded with a very good mark; regarding tests during the course, to receive a pass mark students have to obtain at least 60% of the points.
