History of ancient art 4018-KONW4
The subject of the course is the history of architecture and visual arts in ancient Greece and Rome from the Cretan culture to the fall of the Imperium Romanum.
Each of the topic groups listed below describes works of architecture and visual arts (sculpture, painting, handicrafts), their form and iconography as well as source texts on art and aesthetics against a broad background of history of culture.
- art of the Cretan period
- art of the Mycenaean period
- art in archaic Greece
- art of the classical period
- Hellenic art
- Roman art of the imperial period
- early Christian art
- ancient tradition in modern-era art on the example of selected historical sites in Warsaw
Type of course
Learning outcomes
a. Knowledge: students will characterize, identify and describe works of Minoan, Archaic, Classical, Hellenic, Etruscan, Roman, and Early Christian art
b. Skills: students will analyse the meaning of these works in terms of form and content
c. Social competences: students will appreciate the role of ancient art in the history of European culture
Assessment criteria
The final credit will be awarded based on:
- attendance (3 absences per semester are allowed)
- active participation in classes
- a presentation on a topic agreed upon with the teacher, followed by a discussion in class
- the mark for the final test
