Reading ancient writers 4018-KONW18
The course is devoted to reading a chrestomathy of selected excerpts from ancient Greek texts which are a fundamental part of cultural tradition. Preceded by an introduction to ancient metre, it will present analyses of texts starting from the earliest epic poems written in dactylic hexameter, through lyric poetry, classical drama and classical prose, to excerpts from the Bible in Greek.

Learning outcomes:
a) knowledge:
- being aware of the diversity of Greek and explaining its importance in the history of Greek culture
- basic knowledge on the structures and vocabulary of Ancient Greek enabling the identification of Greek roots in scientific terminology and work with texts by ancient authors
- mastering the rudiments of knowledge on Greek metrics, poetics, topoi, and rhetoric
- the main problems of working as a translator of literary texts from different periods
b) Skills:
- making proper use of dictionaries, grammar books, and auxiliary materials
- comparing and verifying the translation of a selected ancient text with the Greek original
c) Competences:
- being aware of the limited scope of one’s own knowledge and skills
- seeing the need for continual learning and improving one’s professional competence, especially by improving language skills; flexibly defining the directions of one’s own development
Assessment criteria
Upon completing the course students should have general knowledge on the literary works of Roman antiquity; be able to make efficient use of the literature of the subject, be able to carry out a comparative analysis and interpretation of texts from Roman literature, recognize traces of ancient literature in contemporary culture.
