Introduction to Byzantine sacred art 4018-KONW17
The seminar’s aim is to introduce students, mainly those studying New Greek philology, to the world of Byzantine sacred art. In a joint effort of the teacher and the students, the seminar will discuss the phenomenon of one of the most important cultures in the world’s history, whose reception has been and continues to be far from easy. On the example of specific works of art, discussed in detail, students will be able to learn a kind of alphabet of Byzantine sacred art, carefully developed over the centuries by the best thinkers, theologians, art theoreticians and artists, through which the Byzantine tradition spoke for a thousand years and which is also used today. Students of the Greek language are sure to have contact with Byzantine topics, as these are a major component of Greek history, culture, self-awareness. We will talk about architecture, visual arts, the phenomenon of the icon, its emergence, development and rebirth, philosophy, theology, the unique features of the Orthodox Church, its attitude towards culture and art. Students are encouraged to ask questions, to explain any vagueness or doubts during classes, which will be accompanied by a presentation of several hundred slides from the teacher’s collection as well as recordings of singing and music. One or two practical classes will be held at the National Museum, in the permanent exhibition rooms (mainly the Faras gallery) and the storage rooms (collection of icons, class taught jointly with Dr. A. Sulikowska-Gąska from the Institute of Art History, University of Warsaw, and the National Museum). A large part of the classes in the second semester will be devoted to the students’ presentations (oral presentation according to the pattern provided by the teacher, questions, discussion).
