External Policy of the European Union 4003-211PZUE

Lecture is divided in three main modules:

I. International aspects of the European integration;

II. External policy of the EU;

III. EU relations with particular regions of the world.

First module presents the main geopolitical, historical, institutional and legal determinants of the European Union's posture in the world, as well as its international position (by analysing the EU's various potential) and its main international roles.

Second module consists of analyse of external policy of the EU considered as realisation of its international position and role. That policy includes: (1) external economic relations and (2) foreign/security policy. Analysed are definition, history, evolution, phases and future developments of those policies, including main models and instruments. Last part of the module presents results of this policy, as well as perspectives for further strengthening of the position and role of the EU in international relations.

Third module includes an analysis of transatlantic relations; the EU's policy towards the Mediterranean, Africa, Asia, Latin America, South-Eastern Europe, as well as Russia and Ukraine. The topical areas will provide insight into the external and internal factors determining the character of the EU's relations with particular regions of the world. The main areas of cooperation and their stage of development will be highlighted. The problems and challenges facing the EU on the international stage, especially in the context of the globalization of economic process and their growing interdependence, will be discussed.
