Political Systems 4003-112sp
The course analyses political system in contemporary era in both theoretical and especially practical aspects.
It includes main models and elements of every individual system (being it US, the EU, or Russia). It also defines the politcial systems on the globe, including specific system of - for instance - China, Emerging Markets or Failed States (dictatorships).
Globalization forces, strictly connected with the new scientific revolution, known as informatic revolution, to a large extend change the functions of "classical" political systems on the globe.
The course analyses current political systems both from the perspective of globallization and informatic revolution, as well as form the major Western players on the globe. Thus, we have here major Western and Emerging Markets politcal systems under scrutiny and make comparisons of them.
The course is divided into Three Parts and 15 didactic modules (each two hours long).
I. T H E O R Y
1. Political systems - definitions, categories, etc.
2. Main elements of political systems (political parties, organizations, ideologies. etc.
3. Division of political systems due to State apparatus (democracies, authoritarian, totalitarian)
4. Division of political systems due to political regime (monarchy, republic, parliamentary system, etc.)
5. Political systems in unified and non-unified states (federations, confederations)
6. Division of powers (executive, legislative and judiciary) impact on political systems

7. Liberal political systems
8. Political systems on post-communist territories
9. Political systems of Islam world
10. Political systems of East and South-East Asia
11. Authoritarian and millitary regimes

After finishing the course the students should:
KNOWLEDGE
- know the basic terms related to political systems
- know clasification of political systems
- understand differences between political systems
- know the most important poliitical systems on the globe
SKILLS
- be ready to identify the most effecitive political systems, as well as to find-out the reasons behind the cases of so called failed states
- know how to define the criterias of certain political system and be ready to qulify it
- to be ready to assess the qulity of any particular system
- independently judge all political systems in front of him/her
- judge what is the quality of the system surrounding him/her
- specify what factors (positive or negative) are playing role in the political system he/she lives
ATTITUDES
- try independently judge the political reality
- be consciouss how much the political system (of course, in democracy) depends of his/her individual choices
- at least try to have an impact on his/her community in order to improve the political system of the country.
Assessment criteria
Written exam - after passing at least 60 percent of required points.
