The processes of integration in Europe 4003-111-k-pie
The course starts with an analysis of the outcomes of the First World War and the state of the integration in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. Processes and initiatives of integrations are studied such as the cooperation of Belux and Benelux as well as the cooperation of the Skandinavian coutrnies, next to integrative initiatives such as Ententa and Balkan Ententa. An assessment of the level of integration between different states is done. The next thing is the Marshall Plan that is studied in a perspective of European integration as a factor stimulating this integration and a precondition for creating first institutions of European cooperation after the Second World War. Conditions of creating the EEC, EC and Euratom are studied, as well as initiatives that did not conclude in signing a treaty: European Political Community and European Defence Community. From the time of the establishment of the European Communities, processes of integration are studies decade by decade until the Lisbon Treaty. Dynamics between the European states is paid particular attention as well as a long-term processes such as creating common market, Common Agricultural Policy, introducing common currency, creating Schengen area, geographical development of the Communities, strengthening of the institutions of the EC and the processes of creating the European Union.

Having completed the course, students are expected:
in the field of KNOWLEDGE to know:
• basic elements of the notion of Europe
• origins of idea of the European unity
• main stages of European integration
• general rules of functioning of the contemporary European Union
• basic factors determinating future developments of united Europe
in the field of SKILLS to be able to:
• explain origins of the contemporary integrational processes in Europe
• identify the differences between main models of European integration
• describe the main instruments and mechanisms of European integration in historical and contemporary perspective
• analyze publications and media information on the European Union
in the field of SOCIAL COMPETENCIES to manage to:
• formulate own opinions on functionning and main directions of the European Union
• make a critical assessments of different information on undergoings in Europe
• to show independence of thought in constant searching of knowledge and information concerning past and presence of European unity.
Assessment criteria
The final result will be composed of the judgement of the student's knowledge of the literature and the ability to discuss argument (coloqium and marks for activity in the classroom). Students will receive an assignment for a group work which will also make part of the final score.
