The course provides general knowledge about world’s languages which includes their genetic classification, differentiation of their structural properties and sociolinguistic aspects (including different domains of language use and adaptation of writing systems). It also covers communication properties which include cultural backgrounds of discourse and ritual forms of communication (greetings, congratulations, condolences) as well as systemic features of grammar respecting social relations (honorific pronouns, morphemes of interpersonal relations, etc.). Particular presentations deal with cultural properties of languages, manifested in the use of proper names and ethnonyms, culturally motivated metaphors and cultural key-words. The program of the course includes presentation of research on cognitive aspects of some specific forms (such as body part terms used for conceptualization of notions) which justify systemic differences in coding the meanings and differences in meaning of the same notion in various languages. References and choice of particular areas/languages for more detailed presentations are linked with the currently taught languages.
