Techniques of academic work 3500-TP
The aim of the course is to provide its participants with basic knowledge about the functioning of academic and scientific institutions. Participation in the course will allow them to understand the university as a place of learning and an institution of science. As a result, the students should gain the practical ability to use knowledge produced and accumulated by scholars, as well as the technical skills needed in all intellectual work, and primarily in academic activity. They will also gain insight and critical ability to use a variety of sources, from scientific journals and publications to various Internet databases. In particular, they will learn how to independently search for and find needed information. Moreover, participation in the course will familiarize students with the foundations of academic culture, including its oral and written discourse and the established patterns of academic discussions.
The coursework will include numerous forms of individual work: practical tasks, presentations, etc. The results will be discussed in class which will allow the participants to receive feedback both from the course teacher and fellow students. The total workload needed to obtain course credit on the basis of the home assignments is estimated at 40 hours.
