Criminal Policy 3401-PR1-SP-PK-PKd
During the course, we will discuss a number of issues related to the wide range of problems concerning the criminal policy, including but not limited to clarification of the term and subject matter of the criminal policy and criminal policy models on grounds of criminological paradigms; we will analyze the two-layer reaction to crime (counteracting and prevention); we well present present-day trends in the criminal policy and selected individual problems (e.g. sexual offender being an issue of the criminal policy, penal populism). In addition, participants of the course will be presented probation problems, including application of probation measures in punishment.

Upon completing this course a student
in terms of knowledge:
knows and understands the concept of criminal policy and understands what problematic issues constitute the subject of interest in this discipline
knows and understands the standards that should be taken into account when forming the assumptions of the criminal policy
in terms of skills:
can, using structured knowledge, describe criminal policy models in light of different conditions for criminal behaviours and crimes
can critically analyze measures aimed to counteract crimes in light of current situation and size of crimes
can assess the consequences of applying repressive measures to solve social problems in the light of the principle of "criminal law as ultima ratio
is able to diagnose the determinants of specific criminal phenomena and has the ability to evaluate the prevention programs used in crime prevention
can use specialist terminology in the area of criminal policy
in terms of social competences:
recognizes the need for rational use of probation measures in the practice of punishment, taking into account the needs of perpetrators, their families and the assumptions of the criminal policy
can perceive and assess an importance of humanity in light of selected directions and trends in development of the present-day penal policy
Assessment criteria
Permanent appraisal with consideration of attendance and involvement in form of discussions (for classes – also prepared projects and presentations).
Written exam (in justified cases, oral form is allowed)
