Linguistics in a translatological application (Lingüística aplicada a la traducción) 3305-JZT-SEM-MGR
Classes include issues related to the process of writing a master's thesis:
- justification and selection of the topic,
- work methodology,
- choice and use of sources,
- text editing,
- making lists, tables, etc.
- drawing and editing applications
- footnotes and bibliography
The classes also include discussions related to the read books necessary to prepare master's theses. As the last stage, discussions and critical opinions regarding the edited fragments of the work are foreseen.
Seminar participants, after selecting the material they would like to submit to linguistic or translatological analysis, are divided into subgroups
thematic and subject-specific, and choose together with the leading tools and research methods to implement their master's theses. Two subgroups are most often identified: one is made up of people carrying out research projects related to translation issues, while the other consists of people whose master's theses on different types of issues fit into the linguistic research stream.
The formula of the course is based on discussions related to reading readings related to realized master's theses, preceded by presentations on the subject of given texts. At a later stage, it is planned to prepare reports on subsequent fragments of the works they write on a regular basis. These papers are delivered during seminar meetings at the dates indicated by the teacher and each time discussed. Both will be assessed
people presenting a given paper as well as other students taking part in the discussion. They will have to demonstrate the ability to formulate critical judgments and opinions on individual presentations and to put questions to the speaker.
An integral part of the seminar is the library and internet query carried out on its own by each participant,
aimed at finding and selecting bibliographic sources related to the subject of their master's theses.
Students will also be informed about conferences and thematic workshops organized within the current of interest
encouraged to actively participate in these events.
The best works or their fragments created as part of the seminar will be presented at symposia and specialist conferences.
The seminar is intended for students interested in preparing a master's thesis in the field of linguistics (also comparative) in terms of translation studies. The result of the course is to prepare students for the best master's thesis.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course (seminar), the student:
- can choose the right materials for work
- can use bibliographic programs and create a proper bibliography suitable for the master's thesis
- is able to choose the research methodology to the appropriate types of analyzed texts / corpora
- is able to select and apply an appropriate research methodology for the type of analysis to be carried out
- can perform the test on the selected material / body
- can analyze basic and complex linguistic problems
- can analyze the selected material
- is able to draw scientific conclusions at the level of the master's thesis.
KNOWLEDGE - the graduate knows and understands:
- the specific and methodological specificity of the studied field, which is able to develop creatively and apply in professional activities, terminology of the studied direction at the extended level (S1K_W01, S2K_W01),
- linking the direction of romance and other fields of the humanities and social sciences (S1K_W02, S2K_W02),
- basic concepts and principles in the field of intellectual property and copyright protection and the need to manage intellectual property resources (S1K_W03, S2K_W03),
- scientific and cultural phenomena in Poland and Spanish-speaking countries, and in particular has in-depth knowledge of the links between new research and trends in the field of linguistics and translation studies with other humanistic discourses (S1K_W04, S2K_W04),
- terminology, theory and methodology in the fields of linguistics and in particular its links with translation studies (S1K_W05, S2K_W05),
- contemporary achievements of centres and research schools, including selected areas of linguistics and translation studies, also from the perspective of Spanish-speaking area (S1K_W06, S2K_W06).
SKILLS - a good aptitude -
- to use the acquired research skills, covering critical analysis of products of culture and social phenomena of the Spanish or Portuguese language area, synthesis of various ideas and views, choice of methods and construction of research tools, development and presentation of results, allowing for original solving of complex problems in the field of linguistics in a translatological application (S1K_U01, S2K_U01),
- to acquire independently knowledge in the field of the studied field and expand research skills and undertake autonomous activities aimed at developing skills and managing one's own professional career as a translator/interpreter, translation critic or investigator in both fields (S1K_U02, S2K_U02),
- to use the acquired language skills in the field of understanding and creating oral and written texts using professional terminology regarding linguistics and translation studies (S1K_U03, S2K_U03),
- is able to communicate using various channels, communication techniques with specialists in Polish and Spanish, in the fields of science and scientific disciplines, appropriate for linguistics and its links to translation studies (S1K_U06, S2K_U06).
SOCIAL COMPETENCES - the graduate is ready for:
- cooperation in the group, assuming different roles in it arising from the specificity of linguistic research in terms of translation studies (S1K_K01, S2 K_K01),
- solving dilemmas related to the performance of the future profession, especially in the work of translator or translation investigator from a linguistic perspective (S1K_K02, S2 K_K02),
- critical evaluation of his/her own knowledge and skills in the field of linguistics and its relation to translation studies, the graduate also understands the need for continuous development and improvement in both areas (S1K_K03, S2 K_K03),
- active participation in the culture of Spanish-speaking countries using various forms of international cooperation and the media, and is able to work in research teams holding various roles (S1K_K04, S2 K_K04).
Assessment criteria
The final evaluation consists of:
- regular participation in classes (2 unjustified absences allowed)
- active participation in classes
- current fulfillment of the planned exercises
- timely passing of subsequent work fragments
- fulfilling reading reading
Assumptions according to the schedule:
First semester:
- topic selection
- acquiring technical, stylistic and aesthetic rules concerning the writing of scientific papers
Second semester:
- collecting a bibliography
- reading the materials necessary to start writing a master's thesis
- editing of part of the work regarding the existing state of research in the field of the topic under development
Third semester:
- job editing, all chapters
The fourth semester:
- editorial and introduction
- corrections
- submitting a job and preparing for defense
Practical placement
Studencia has the opportunity to participate in scientific and cultural events organized by ISIiI as translators, technical help, members of organizational committees, guides, etc.
