YEAR ONE

WRITING / EXPRESSION ÉCRITE
Year one - winter and spring semester = 90 hours throughout the year
Syllabus: Analysis and editing narrative, descriptive and informative texts. Introduction to reports and executive summaries (compte rendu).
Student assessment criteria: Credit will be awarded on the basis of active in-class participation, positive results of written assignments prepared at home and within the framework of the so-called controlled autonomy (épreuves sur table).
There is a written examination at the end of the course.
Learning outcomes:
Students should be able to draft and edit a variety of forms of written expression, in particular reports and executive summaries (compte rendu) and narrative essays (récit). By doing so, they should improve their linguistic skills in the field of grammatical and syntactic accuracy, as well as be able to tell and employ individual language registers.

SPEAKING / EXPRESSION ORALE
Year one - winter and spring semester: 2 hrs/week = 60 hours throughout the year
Syllabus: Understanding spoken texts (audio and video recordings), observations pertaining to the coherence of oral expression, delivering speeches prepared in advance (exposé) and spontaneous expressions at discussions in class.
Student assessment criteria: Credit will be awarded on the basis of active in-class participation, delivering an in-class speech and a vocabulary test.
There is an examination at the end of the course.
Learning outcomes:
Students are expected to become more fluent whilst speaking in French. In doing so, they should be able to construct a brief (participation in discussion, speaking one's mind) and longer (5-to-10-minute presentation of an issue or article) oral expression which is meets all the criteria of linguistic accuracy.
Underlying the course is the aim to extend students' range of vocabulary and help them hone precision in accurately selecting words to be used in their presentations.

PRACTICAL GRAMMAR /GRAMMAIRE APPLIQUÉE
Year I - winter and spring semester: 4 hrs/week = 120 hours throughout the year
Syllabus: Broadening students' knowledge in the field of use of tenses, articles and ways of referencing other people's speech (indirect speech and seemingly indirect speech). Systematization of morphological knowledge.
Student assessment criteria: attendance and in-class participation, systematic studying for classes, positive results of check tests.
There is an examination at the end of the course.
Learning outcomes: Enhancing students' grammatical and syntactic accuracy of all forms of written expression. Students should be able to use the knowledge gained in practice in all forms of written and oral expression.
Getting a credit in the first year: evaluating students' work and participation during the semester. In order to be eligible to take the exam, students are required to get a credit in all the four parts of the programme (written expression, oral expression, analysis of a literary text and applied grammar).

Final exam following year one: The examination consists of a written part and an oral part:
Written part: grammatical test and a compte rendu
Oral part: oral presentation on an assigned topic based on materials covered during the course.
