Lecture course - History of French literature of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries
Chronology, crisis of faith and ideas, directions of modern philosophy (empiricism, sensualism, rationalism) and religious trends (theism, deism); styles (baroque, classicism, rococo, sentimentalism, neoclassicism); a new understanding of the role of the philosopher and writer and literature itself, the evolution of tragedy and comedy, the flourishing and transformation of novels (Scarron, Furetière and Sorel, d'Urfé, Mlle de Scudéry and Mme de Lafayette, Lesage, Prévost and Crébillon son). A few silhouettes of writers (Corneille, Racine and Molier, Descartes, Pascal and La Rochefoucauld, Voltaire, Rousseau and Diderot), new philosophical and aesthetic categories, changes of old concepts. The success of the epistolary novel (Guilleragues, Montesquieu, Mme de Graffigny, Rousseau, Laclos). Spanish, English, Italian and German cultural influences.

Learning outcomes
After listening to the lecture, the student:
- knows and understands: the chronology of the epoch and the most important dates, names of authors and titles of their works, knows and understands the discussed concepts and terminology in the field of literary studies, understands the importance of the Baroque period, Classicism and French Enlightenment for French literature and culture (K_W02, K_W03)
-can: connect various literary phenomena, show the importance of individual authors, their texts or theories for the development of French literature and culture and express their opinion referring to theoretical approaches appropriate for literary studies (K_U03, K_U05)
-is ready to identify problems related to the understanding of both literary periods and solve them in accordance with their literary knowledge (K_K03)
Assessment criteria
Pass requirements: compulsory attendance and a 80-minute written examination.
The form and criteria for passing the course may change depending on the current epidemic threat situation. Equivalent crediting conditions will be determined in accordance with the guidelines in force at the University of Warsaw, in consultation with the participants of the classes.
