American Modernist Fiction II 3301-LA222
Kurs jest przeglądem twórczości prozaików amerykańskich tworzących w konwencji modernistycznej w latach 1900-1955. Jeden z najbardziej dynamicznych i płodnych okresów w literaturze amerykańskiej, modernizm jest z reguły kojarzony z innowacyjnością, teoriami prymatu sztuki i artystycznej niezależności oraz z pisarzami takimi jak William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, F.S. Fitzgerald, Gertruda Stein, Anzia Yezierska, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, czy Ralph Ellison. Kurs nie tylko ma na celu pogłębić studentów zrozumienie twórców postrzeganych jako kanonicznych, ale i wprowadzić tzw. "modernizm etniczny." Ponadto ma on na celu przedstawić twórczość modernistyczną na tle debat politycznych, społecznych i artystycznych tych czasów. Przedyskutujemy wpływ nowych teorii filozoficznych i psychologicznych takich jak fenomenologia, psychoanaliza, czy eugenika, a także dwóch głównych systemów totalitarnych w owych czasach: faszyzmu i komunizmu. Ponadto przyjrzymy się na koegzystowaniu prozy i filmu ze szczególnym naciskiem na rolę Hollywood w tworzeniu nowej literatury.
