The aim of lectures is

- to present in a systemic way the general knowledge important for course credits;
- to introduce students into the basic literature on the theory of cultural studies;
- to present major theoretical approaches to the study of culture;
- to introduce students into the development of the Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian cultures;
- to analyze major cultural phenomena in the different historical periods, i.e. intellectual movements, education, fine arts, the role of church and the culture of daily life.

In the first part of the course the theoretical foundation of cultural studies will be presented. Scientific understanding of the term of “culture”, the history of the cultural study. The place and the role of cultural study among the various human sciences studying culture; theoretical knowledge of cultural study approaches will be illustrated with the cultural phenomena in the different historical periods of Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian development.

The seminars will aim:

- to enrich the knowledge obtained at lectures;
- to apply theoretical knowledge to analysis of cultural forms and texts;
- to gain the interpretation skills
- to mobilize students to work systematically.

The work in groups will be introduced, during which the student will develop their analytical skill applied to understanding and interpretation of cultural phenomena in the context of historical development. Discussions during the workshops will provide students with better understanding of the meaning of different historical periods in the cultural development of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, and will help students in gaining research competence in the history of Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian cultures.

Lectures + seminars = 60 hours.
Preparation for every workshop:
2 hours per week = 30 hours.
Preparation for examination = 10 hours.
Total = about 100 hours.
