The aim of the classes is to provide students with knowledge in the field of phonetics of the Russian language and to develop their competence in correct pronunciation.
Topics covered during the course
- phonetic system of the Russian language,
- basic phonetic units (sound, syllable, phonetic word),
- classification of sounds, characteristics of vowels and consonants.
- properties of the Russian accent,
- stressed and unstressed syllables.
- vowel reduction (spelling and pronunciation)
- articulation of consonants
- pronunciation of hard and soft consonants
- consonant connections (spelling and pronunciation)
- voicing and unvoicing
- simplification of consonant groups.
Student workload:
Contact hours (in the room) – 30 hours – 1 ECTS
preparation for classes and credits – 30 hours – 1 ECTS

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student:
-knows the basic terminology used in phonetics and has knowledge of phonetic units and phenomena
-has the ability to correctly pronounce the sounds of the Russian language to the extent that enables effective communication
- is aware of the need for continuous development of his/her own competences
- can cooperate and work in a group
- is aware of the role of correct and careful articulation of sounds in the process of social communication
Assessment criteria
Conditions for passing the course and admission to the final credit:
- attendance at classes;
- control of current preparation;
- completion of group and individual projects.
The final exam consists of 2 components:
Written test
oral exam (reading a fragment of the text while observing the rules of correct pronunciation)
The evaluation criteria are presented in the form of percentage thresholds (conversion of points):
99-100% - 5 ! (very good with an exclamation point)
93- 98 % - 5 (very very good)
87-92% - 4+ (good plus rating)
77-86% - 4 (rated good)
70-76% - 3+ (satisfactory plus)
60-69% - 3 (satisfactory)
2 unexcused absences are allowed. Exceeding the excused and unexcused absences in 50% of classes may be the basis for failing the course and not allowing for the final credit.
The student has the right to take part in the final work in the retake session in the same form as in the basic session and provided that the student takes part in the admission to pass the course.
