Translation workshop 3221-30WP32K

The first part of the workshop is dedicated to teaching the language and substantive analysis of existing translations of the Belarusian literature into Polish and Polish literature into Belarusian language. The critical nature of the analysis is intended to raise the awareness of students on the basic problems of translating literature, such as: understanding the contexts (cultural, historical, et al.) introduced by the authors of the originals; understanding of imagery and gaining ability to assess its specific features and implications associated with the strategy of translation; relationship between the characteristic features of the style of the author and translational strategy; the importance of determine the dominant (stylistic and substantive), the significance and strategic methods of interpretation. Students learn the fundamental (present in the translations into Belarusian and from Belarusian language) the types of translations, translation strategies and characteristics of major styles of the translators. Also familiarize themselves with the latest trends in contemporary Belarusian translation (among others Belarutenisation of issues). Students learn the basic types of translation errors and basic terminology associated with the description of translations. Analysis of individual interpretation is complemented by joint attempts to translate the songs into Polish and Belarusian language. The coronation of this curriculum is to prepare its own analysis of translation chosen by the student in writing.
The second part of the course contains self-analysis of the translations made by the students. Each student prepares a translation of a poem and prose passage. Presents it to the other, informing about the problems related to work on it. Students analyze the presented translations and make their assessment.
Participation in the classes - 30 hours;

Preparation of the critical work - 15 hours.

Learning outcomes

After completing the workshop student:
- defines the basic terms used to describe the translation;
- describes in a competent manner necessary substantive requirements to undertake translation work ;
- refers translation errors to the translator's strategy of compensation issues;
- distinguishes between the different translation errors and a translation strategies;
- uses knowledge of the contexts to prepare hisr own translations;
- argues a chosen translation strategy;
- constructs a poetic translation;
- constructs a piece of prose translation.

Assessment criteria

- class activity (including the use of theoretical knowledge to evaluate the translation) - 40% of final grade;
- preparation of a critical work on the translation - 30% of final grade;
- preparationre own translations - 30% of the final grade.
