History of Belarussian literature - 19th century 3221-30HL21A
The lecture is to present a systematic knowledge needed to complete the course, familiarize students with the Belarusian literature of the nineteenth century.
The course focuses on so called new Belarusian literature, which was based on language and folk art. The revival of the Belarusian language and literature is discussed in relation to historical and social events (insurgent activity, a restrictive policy of the tsarist regime, the liquidation of the Vilnius University, the breakdown of student organizations, Belarusian preventing publication). Attention is drawn to the romantic idea of the impact on folklore interests, the role of the Vilnius intelligency and Philomats youth in promoting Belarusian folk art, as well as the contribution of Polish-Belarussian writers in the revival of the Belarusian language and literature (Y. Barshchevski, A. Rypin, Y. Chechot, V. Dunin-Marcinkevich). There is also shown the development of realistic Belarusian literature (works by F. Bahushevich, Y. Luchyna, A. Hurynovich, F. Tapcheuski).
Exercises are designed to deepen the knowledge acquinted during the lecture, to develop skills helping in understanding a literary text.
Estimated number of hours that a student should spend on mastering the content is approximately - 120 (60 hrs. of classes and 60 hours. of indyvidual studying)

Learning outcomes
After completing the course (lectures, exercises), student:
- knows the literary process in Belarus in the nineteenth century in the historical and social context;
- knows how to define properly the periodization of the new Belarusian literature;
- knows how to explain the main themes, issues and motives of the new Belarusian literature;
- knows how to analyze literary texts of individual poets, novelists and playwrighters.
