Dialectology 3221-30DL31K
During the one semester lasting course Belarusian dialects of territory that is in the borders of Belarusian Republic and territories near the borders of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Russia are discussed. On the beginning, terms, kinds and structure of dialects and local dialects, development of dialectology and linguistic geography and the meaning of dialectology and its relations to other sciences: historical grammar, history and ethnography are discussed.
Then, one characterizes main dialectic features in phonetic and phonology (variety of stressed vocalism and non-stressed vocalism, range and types of akannie and yakannie, oking and yeking local dialects and transitory local dialects), in consonantism (phonologic oppositions, palatalism-lack of palatalism, assimilation and its kinds, dissimilation and its kinds, patterns of realization in local dialects the combination: palatalized consonant + ?j", prosthetic consonants, metathesis, epenthesis, cokanie), in morphology (dialectic variety in separate language parts and relief of archaic and innovative features and in the confrontation with the rule and the practice of literary language). After discussing the main features of local Belarusian dialects the course focuses on characteristics of two basic dialects: north-eastern (territorial range, common features of all dialect, basic local dialects groups: northern, Witebsk-Mohylew type, Polock type, the genesis of north-eastern Belarusian local dialects and their relations with western Russian dialects, Belarus-Russia language borderland), south-western (territorial range, common features of all dialect, basic local dialects groups: southern, Mozyr (eastern) type, western (north-western subgroup), individuality of Polesie group, Belarus-Ukraine language borderland, Polesie group and the rest Belarusian local dialects territory comparison) and central dialect (features and genesis, transitory local dialects). In the end they discuss Belarusian local dialects of north-eastern part of Bialystok area (territorial range, genesis, division, akaing nonmazuring dialect, akaing mazuring dialect, okaing nonmazuring dialect, okaing mazuring dialect, Belarus-Poland language borderland).
During the course we pay a great attention on reading and analyzing dialectic texts and on methodical preparing students for working as a dialectologist.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, student:
- knows the structure of the Belarusian dialects, and has the ability to distinguish between dialect texts on the basis of phonetic, morphological and lexicalcharacteristics for particular regions of Belarus;
- can read dialect text and tranlate it into literary language;
- correctly determines the phonetic and morphological characteristics, and interpret the reasons for the development of different phenomena in different dialects;
- also understands the relationships between dialectology and the history of nation and language development.
