The course covers the following topics:
Introduction to phonetics. Practical vs. theoretical phonetics. Articulatory and acoustic phonetics.
The organs of speech. General classification of sounds.
Pronunciation and orthography. Phonetic transcription.
Articulation of Russian consonants. Russian vs. Polish consonants. Manner and place of articulation. Palatalised and velarized consonants. Voiced and voiceless consonants. Russian consonants in context.
Articulation of Russian vowels. Cardinal vowels. Vowel reduction.
Syllable structure. Phonotactics.
Suprasegmental phonetics. Main characteristics of stress. Rhythm in Russian and in Polish.
Basic differences between phonological systems of Russian and Polish.

Prerequisites (description)

Students are assumed to display proficient language skills and to have basic knowledge of the Russian and Polish sound structure.

Learning outcomes

A student learns basic concepts of phonetics and phonology as well as acquires information about the differences in the phonetic structure of Russian and Polish.
