The aim of the course is to present the methodologies used in terminological research, which plays a fundamental role in the translator's work. Having completed the course the student is able to conduct terminological analysis at the level of a MA thesis. As for practical aspects of terminological work, the students will be presented with the principles of collection of terminological data, the basics of quantitative and qualitative data analysis and/or the methods of creation of statistical descriptions and evaluation surveys. Besides, the students will get familiar with information tools/technologies intended to support the translation process.
The course content will concern among others the following subject areas:
• characteristics of the process of computer-assisted translation
• typology of CAT and terminological tools
• principles of creating terminological databases for the purposes of a translation project
• creating terminological databases on the basis of translation projects with the use of term extraction functionalities, parallel text corpora and non-commercial tools
• managing terminological databases as parts of a translation project
• practical aspects of sharing translation resources
• online resources for translatos and the methods of their verification
Student workload:
Classroom activities: 30 h = 1 ECTS
Self-study: 25 h = 1 ECTS
including:
• 5 h for preparing for classes
• 10 h for studying for the final test
• 10 h for doing the final project
