Gender and social change in the 20th century 3104-M2HS-DK17-OG
The main aim of the course is an analysis of the socio-cultural phenomena in terms of gender order and its impact on women’s situation. Primary and secondary sources – films and pop-culture – will be a starting point for the discussion concerning the impact of social changes on gender order with special attention to everyday practices, life strategies etc.
The analysis of specific phenomena will refer to historical periods of the Second Republic, postwar Poland and the time of transition.
The main topics of the course:
• From suffrage to reproductive rights - women’s movement agenda
• Work (professional emancipation of women, gendering labour market, unemployment, paid and unpaid work of women)
• Sexuality and reproduction (debates on penalty if abortion, contraception, prostitution)
• War and violence (faces of violence, sexual violence, women as victims and perpetrators)

Learning outcomes
After the course students will have knowledge from gender history of Poland – they define gender and other analytical categories (such as heteronormative order, sexuality etc) and use them in historical research. Students can interpret the key socio-cultural phenomena of Polish history in the 20th century from gender perspective
Assessment criteria
Method of discussion based on readings.
Condition of positive note:

- preparation for classes
- writing an essay
Critiria of the note: 1) activity in discussions; 2) an essay (8 pages) – to achieve the highest note (5.0)
