Ethnicity and Religion: Jews in the Greco-Roman Period 3104-LJS-ERZHEL-OG
The topic of the lecture is Jewish history from the Maccabean revolt until the 7th century CE. During this period, the Jews lived in an independent state ruled by the Hasmoneans, and later remained within the Roman sphere of influence. The aim of the lecture is to familiarize the students with the political history of Jews within the context of a changing outside world, revolts against the Roman authorities, the Jewish world after the destruction of the second temple, the Christianization of Palestine in late antiquity, and the policy of the Christian authorities with regards to Jews. The lecture will also cover the different Jewish religious groups before the emergence of rabbinical Judaism, the rabbinic movement from the 2nd century CE until the 4th century CE, and Jewish institutions in the diaspora and Palestine in late antiquity.
