Practical stylistics of Lithuanian language 3020-BA3PSL
The subject of the course is the basic issues of functional stylistics. During the classes, students are presented in a systematic way with the possibilities of the modern Lithuanian language system in this area. They get acquainted with stylistic means - variants and synonyms (covering all levels of the language) and stylistic figures (lexical-semantic, word-forming, morphological, syntactic, graphic and phonetic). Reading texts (or fragments of texts) selected by the instructor, the listeners search in them for the learned linguistic forms and stylistic figures. When writing their own texts on a given topic, they try to avoid unnecessary lexical and syntactic repetitions, choose words precisely, use neutral words and stylistically characterized words (diminutives and coarsenesses) in accordance with the communicative situation and the function of the message. They pay attention to both the unambiguity and logicality of the formulated sentences, as well as the coherence of the entire speech.
Analyzing selected excerpts from literary and journalistic texts, students determine the individuality of the author's style. They define functional styles (artistic, scientific, official, journalistic and colloquial), indicating their characteristics. Using the example of advertising texts, they observe the interpenetration of different functional styles. The most attention among functional styles is paid to journalistic, scientific (reading with understanding an uncomplicated philological text) and official (names and structure of basic functional letters - official letter, resume, application).
