Descriptive grammar of Lithuanian 3020-BA2GOL
The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the basic range of traditional and recent linguistic knowledge of the modern Lithuanian language. The course covers the basic knowledge of the following topics:
Grammatical categories of nominative and verbal words. Phonetics and phonology. Prosody. Principles of phonetic transcription. Morphology and word variety. Declension systems of nouns, adjectives, pronouns and numerals. The conjugation system. The conjugation of participles. Vocabulary. Varieties of derivation, characteristic of the Lithuanian language. Syntax. Types of statements. Syntactic compounds. Syntactic series. Word order of the Lithuanian language.
The course lasts two semesters and ends with a written exam. The prerequisite for taking the exam is attendance and participation in classes, as well as writing and passing an annual paper.
Student workload:
– participation in classes – 2 ECTS
– ongoing preparation for classes – 2 ECTS
– preparation of a final paper – 1 ECTS

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is able to:
- identify basic Lithuanian linguistic phenomena and processes in the field of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics and describe them from a synchronic perspective;
- use a network of basic linguistic concepts and terms and their equivalents from the Lithuanian grammatical tradition;
- recognize the most important features of Lithuanian grammatical phenomena and propose their theoretical analysis;
Assessment criteria
- Activity in class, independent preparation for class.
- Two unexcused absences are allowed, each additional absence should be made up according to the rules agreed with the person conducting the classes. 50% absence. classes excludes admission to the exam.
- Writing and checking of the annual work
The subject ends with a written examination.
- During classes, students can use AI tools, e.g. to collect materials, analyze the state of research and create bibliographies. The use of AI tools for interpretation purposes, to create written statements or to develop text fragments is prohibited.
