History of the region - Balkans 3005-KL1DBAZ
The aim of the lecture is to present the general history of events and changes that occurred in the Balkan territories. The course is to provide students not only with historical knowledge, but also with methods of evaluating visions of the past. The initial classes will focus on the problems of worldviews and mindsets, ways in which history is written (history shall be seen as narration embedded in a particular socio-political context). The course focuses on the cultures of Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Montenegro, in their contemporary context. Subsequent lectures aim at clarifying the general character of formation process of cultural heritage transmission as well as that of symbolic systems which founded these nations’ respective identities. Emphasis will be put on elements, people, and events that constitute the living memory, i.e. which have become instrumental either in self-defining cultural narratives of the Slavic nations in the Balkans, or in forming of contention areas. The series of lectures is planned in a chronological perspective, so as to consider primarily the issues of continuity and change (process of long-term process and civilization change). An important part of the curriculum is to provide factual information (geography and geopolitics of the Balkans).

Learning outcomes
Students will gain basic knowledge on Balkan history as well as ability to recognize the symbols, figures and places crucial for identity narrations and the shaping of visions of the past. The students should be able to grasp the characteristics specific aspects of these three cultures, aspects which proved constitutive in the forming of their respective contemporary societies, as well as indicate the significant moments in the history of countries/cultures of the area. Participants will gain knowledge on ethnic relations in these countries and be prepared to characterize the problematic areas or sources of conflicts. Knowledge of regional geography should also be enhanced.
Assessment criteria
Term examination (written test and oral exam). Tests consist of tasks focusing primarily on the knowledge of facts. The final oral exam is intended to confirm the general understanding and interpretative skills as to interpretation of historical data, the knowledge of the most significant social transformations and of the forming of contemporary Balkan Slavonic cultures.
