Polish as Foreign Language 3003-JPJ-OG
The seminar combines problems of linguistics and glottodidactics.
Students acquire basic skills necessary while teaching Polish as a foreign language.
Course topics:
1. Direct and indirect methods of teaching foreign languages.
2. Four language skills developed during courses of Polish as a foreign language: speaking, understanding, reading, writing.
3. Ways of acquainting foreigners with elements of Polish culture.
5. Typical schedule of courses of Polish as a foreign language.
6. Typological characteristics of language.
7. Working with beginners' groups.
8. Teaching Polish declension.
9. Teaching Polish conjugation. Difficulties associated with teaching aspect.
10. Agglutinativity of Polish verb forms or how to control movable ends of the verb.
11. Introduction of mood category.
12. Methods of introducing imperative mood.
13. Methods of introducing conditional mood.
14. Introducing adjective and adverbial participles.
15. Exercises in use of verbs of movement by foreigners.
16. Possible use of connotations and sentence schemes in teaching Polish as a foreign language.
17. Introducing new vocabulary and consolidating the already known.
18. Working with text. Types of texts for different levels of teaching.
19. Phraseology and difficulties with its application.
20. Syntactical synonymy in teaching foreigners.
21. Polish poetry in teaching foreigners.
Students should familiarize themselves with the reading provided for in the seminar programme and actively participate in classes, taking part in discussions, giving short lectures, writing lesson schedules or, if possible, having short lessons for foreigners at various levels.

Learning outcomes
A student who has completed the course is prepared to teach Polish as a foreign language. The student in particular:
1) recognizes direct and indirect methods of teaching Polish as a foreign language;
2) evaluates language competence of foreigners learning Polish;
3) analyzes available handbooks for teaching foreigners with respect to content and the methodology applied;
4) uses the knowledge of Polish descriptive grammar to compile exercises for foreigners learning Polish;
5) develops other didactic materials for classes of Polish as a foreign language;
6) works out synapses of lessons of Polish as a foreign languages at various levels.
Assessment criteria
Evaluation on the basis of attendance and active participation in the course (taking part in discussions, preparation of presentations and independent problem solving, also in the form of written tasks on the "Kampus" platform). Detailed criteria used for issuing grades will be presented in during the first meeting.
