The Language of Argumentation 3003-C262JK1
The aim of the seminar will be to continue and develop the themes discussed during the first year of the seminar. The main subject of the first semester will be a) analysis of selected examples of argumentative texts, b) review and redefinition of selected argumentation schemes, c) corpus-based approaches to pragmatics and argumentation: elements of corpus-based pragmatics, review of existing argumentation corpora and approaches to annotation of argumentative texts.
In the second semester, the seminar participants will successively present the results achieved during the preparation of their theses. Detailed selection of readings and topics will be subordinated to the interests and research needs of participants.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student:
- knows linguistic terminology in the field of pragmatics, including corpus pragmatics, and is able to use it,
- analyses the text in terms of its cognitive and persuasive functions, taking into account argumentation schemes and persuasive operators,,
- creates and analyses a corpus of texts, in particular of an argumentative nature,
- is able to search for required information,
- is familiar with methods and ethical issues of research work.
Assessment criteria
Attendance and active participation in classes (e.g. presentation of a talk, familiarity with relevant texts), tests and written assignments. To obtain credit for the seminar, it is necessary to complete the thesis.
