Elements of Literary Theory 3001-11A3TL
The main objective of the lecture is to lay bare the problematicy of the basic knowledge in poetics, mandatory to all the students of polish department. The aim will be archived by answering to two questions:
1. What philosophical presuppositions and what historical circumstances influenced the science of poetics?
2. What ontological, epistemological, esthetical, ethical problems were attempted to be resolved by means of building theoretical and historical poetics. Which problems were never resolved and which are awaiting their resolution?
Taking into consideration the pheanomena described by two branches of poetics, versology and genology, the students will learn some elementary notions of literary theory, such as: arbitrariness, zaumnyj jazyk, estrangement, poeticity, materiality of the language, iconicity, representation, truth, the word of the other, heteroglossia, dialogicity, intertextuality, historicity, genetism, historism, literary tradition, diachronics, synchronics, system, device, poetic function, and others.
The cycle of the lectures will be concentrated around six watchwords: voice, absolute poetry, history, naturalism, poetic language, social life These are the notions, or the short names of the ideas and the contextual problems which through ages have set the directions of development of literary theory toward the present-day status of versology and literary genetics.
Giving up the traditional method of dissecting the material into schools of literary theory, or branches of poetics, and taking into consideration the broad historical perspective shall facilitate the answer to the questions:
- does poetics, as it is today, applicable to literature;
- what reforms of poetics are carried out and what picture of literature do those reforms show;

Student who will complete the course will:
- be acquainted with the basic notions of literary theory, be able to connect them to with the proper school, know the way they are applied to a literary and non-literary text;
- know how to describe certain phenomena of poetics from the viewpoints of different currents in literary theory, how to compare the perspectives, state their possibilities and limitations when it comes to analysis of literary and non-literary texts
- gain an orientation in present-day literary theory; is able to show the problems of poetica that demand further development, know the literature that should be helpful when doing so.
Assessment criteria
Completion based on the writen test. Questions will deal only with the material of the lecture.
