CHILD AND FAMILY NEEDS ASSESSMENT IN SOCIAL WORK 2300-PPDiR/PS

The course focuses on the following issues:
1. The basic terms and definitions. The concept of assessment. Assessing as an element of the organized process cycle.
2. Building the initial contact in the social work. The skills of building the engagement and relationship with various types of clients. The sources of ethical dilemma in social work assessment process.
3. Observation and measuring as assessment techniques and skills. Describing, organizing, interpreting and concluding on the basis data collected during the assessment process.
4. Assessment of child's family situation: the level of satisfying the child's and its family needs. Getting to know child's needs and competences. Graphic techniques in social work assessment" genogram, family relationships diagram, ecomap and others.
5. Assessment of children and families in need. Maltreatment and abuse within the family in social work assessment: the basic symptoms and risk factors. Measuring and evaluating the risk.
Student's skills and knowledge:
" Is acquainted with and knows how to use various assessment methods and techniques applicable in social work practice
" Without extra help provided, finds and creates if needed assessment tools necessary for working with child and its family
" Is able to build the initial contact with clients and cooperates with different professionals working with children and families
" Selects the adequate diagnostic methods and techniques to child's and its family needs and problems
" Knows how to describe, interpret and evaluate the data collected and draws a conclusion to his further work from the assessment process
