Foundations of assessment and pedagogical therapy 2300-PDTP/OP
The course focuses on the following issues:
- Assessment, diagnosis, evaluation – determining terminology,
- Assessing in the model of psychopedagogical diagnosis,
- Catalogue of the basic principles of assessment - an ethical dimension in the assessment situation,
- Basic methods and techniques of assessment: interview, observation, analysis of documents, projection tests/ techniques,
- Basics of assessing the child's situation at school, group, family - ecological and developmental theory,
- Variables of family system; exploring the family using graphic techniques, scales and questionnaires,
- Assessing difficulties and school failure of children,
- Methods for working with children with specific learning difficulties, the principles of constructing remedial classes,
- Methods of working and supporting children and dysfunctional families: helping children from families with problems of alcohol abuse and violence,
- Child’s emotional harm: methods of intervention, behavioral therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy,
- The family with communication problems: video interaction training, family group conferences,
- A child and family after trauma: death and mourning, the family and the illness, family and mental disorders,
- Building individual plans of child assistance/support,
- Create a family assistance plans.

Learning outcomes
- Enumerates and defines the methods and techniques used in the assessment work of educators, teachers and pedagogues,
- Knows and defines basic concepts such as: diagnosis, assessment, assessment methods and techniques, domestic violence, emotional harm, trauma, learning difficulties, school failure, etc.,
- Describes the most frequently used strategies and forms of therapy work with children in need,
- Explains and illustrates the usefulness of various methods of working with the child,
- Finds, and if necessary, creates diagnostic/assessment tools needed in work with the child and family,
- Creates a supportive relationship with the child and parents,
- Can cooperate with other professionals working with child and family,
- Selects appropriate methods and techniques of assessment to the needs and problems of child and family,
- Describes, interprets and evaluates the data collected,
- Applies in practice the methods and techniques of assessment,
- Formulates hypotheses and recommendations for further work,
- Selects the most appropriate method of working with the child and family based on the recognition of their needs,
- Formulates recommendations for working with individual family members and the entire family system,
-Applies ethical standards in working with child and family,
-Appreciates the need for confidentiality, acceptance and understanding in working with child and family.
Assessment criteria
Methods and criteria of assessment:
- Attendance (permitted two absences per semester),
- Preparation for classes – reading literature, do homework,
- Papers. In the first semester the student writes a report based on interviews and observation of the child, analyzes child’s drawing and uses one of the graphic techniques (to choose from: genogram, ecomap or diagram of family relationships). In the second semester, the student creates an individual assistance/support plan for child and family.
Final grade is the mean of grades from papers. If more absences or lack of preparation for classes the student is required to pass an overdue material.
