MS2-Working with a family with alcohol problems 2300-NZ2-MS2-SDR-PRA
The course covers the following issues:
•understand the nature of addiction and codependency,
•look at different groups of patients, drug treatment facilities (men, women, youth, elderly, etc.),
•know the dimensions of functioning of the family with alcohol problems,
•understanding the perspective of all family members (dependent, codependent, children)
•get to know the opportunities for the treatment of alcoholism (models, centers, self-help movements, etc.)
•knowledge of strategies and prevention programs to reduce the risk of alcohol problems.

Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE
•Knows the diagnostic criteria for alcohol (ICE-10, DSM-IV),
•Knows the phase types, the consequences of alcoholism,
•Knows the mechanisms associated with family functioning alcoholic with a perspective of all family members,
Knows the programs and drug treatment models, and the essence of self-help movement/groups,
•Knows prevention programs which take into account the alcohol problem.
SKILLS
•Can diagnose alcohol dependence and codependency,
•Evaluates the situation of a child in an alcoholic family and school environment,
•Indicates the possible assistance to persons/families with alcohol problems.
SOCIAL COMPETENCE
• can work together in a group to create and implement a help program for people / families with an alcohol problem
• is able to use various concepts explaining addiction and treatment models in planning and working
Assessment criteria
The basis for the final evaluation are
• Homework assignments - Work cards prepared on the basis of subject literature (including specific groups of addiction treatment patients, characteristics of the addicted person, co-addicted person and individual roles of children).
• Participation and report of the selected meeting AA, A-ANON, DDA
• Attendance at the classes (admissible 2nb)
• Preparation for classes (literature)
• colloquium
Practical placement
The subject is closely related to the implemented 60-hour institutional practice focused on learning the forms and methods of helping a problem family with special consideration of the alcohol problem (adults, children).
On the list of suggested places of practice there are counseling centers / addiction treatment centers, sociotherapeutic day care centers, curator teams, OPS (family assistant)
