During the course students will become familiar with the directions and results of contemporary research on reading.
In the process of improving knowledge about reading and writing activities, they will:
- learn how to develop these skills at different stages of a child's education,
- learn about modern approaches to teaching these skills within the constructivist assumptions of learning and teaching (reading with comprehension strategies),
- analyze the existing standards for evaluating these skills in the process of assessing school performance,
- analyze contemporary research on the disorders of the process of learning to read and write and ways of treating them,
- learn about the selected training methods and techniques of speed reading capabilities of students and adults in this area.

Prerequisites (description)

Formal requirements: courses for students of preschool and primary education and those interested in the problems of reading and writing. Initial Assumptions: students have basic knowledge of child developmental psychology in preschool and primary school, with final grades for the first year of undergraduate studies.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will:
 have the knowledge of:
 the process of learning reading and writing and causes of disorders in mastering these skills,
 contemporary research on reading and writing activity,
 the importance of these skills for a man living in the modern world;
 be able to:
 describe and explain the course of mastering reading and writing skills at different stages of education,
 apply specific tools to diagnose reading and writing skills,
 explain the causes of disturbances in mastering these skills;
 have an attitude of understanding:
 the teacher’s responsibility for the child's success in mastering the art of reading and writing,
 the importance of these skills in the life of modern man.

Assessment criteria

Gaining course credit (to choose): preparing a presentation on a selected topic, a book review, the diagnosis of reading and writing skills - analysis of individual case, a research project.
Grading scale from: 2 - 5
Criteria of grading: attendance and class participation - 30%, assignment - 50%, attendance - 20%
