Geography of population and settlement 1900-3-GLO-GSEC
During the course the issues related to the factors shaping the population are raised. Students will learn population theories and the implications of increasing and decreasing population. The second issue is the age structure of the population and the ageing process. The course discusses the causes and social, economic and spatial consequences of the ageing of society. Examples of anti-aging policies are shown. Another group of issues is migration - the causes and effects of migration, types of migration, the way of taking decisions to migrate, factors stimulating and limiting migration are presented. The second part of the lecture deals with the geography of settlement, especially contemporary transformations of urban areas.

SKILLS - the student is able to:
1. analyze population data, can apply and interpret indicators used in population and settlement studies
2. apply theoretical knowledge of socio-economic geography to describe and solve a research problem
3. correctly interpret and explain mutual relations between social and natural phenomena and processes in urbanised or tourist areas
4. forecast changes in social processes in urbanised or tourist areas
5. present orally the results of research in socio-economic geography with the help of a properly developed presentation
6. prepare written papers on socio-economic geography based on literature and/or own research
7. independently plan their own academic or professional career in industries related to the city or tourism
COMPETENCES - the student is competent:
1. analytical, can make a conclusion on the basis of collected data, can indicate and discuss causal relations within the scope of settlement and demography
2. broadening professional competences and updating knowledge in the field of socio-economic geography, enriched with an interdisciplinary dimension
Assessment criteria
EXERCISES
Attendance during class is mandatory, one absence is allowed. During the course students present a chosen method of demographic data analysis, and then proceed to their own study.
You must turn in a paper on the assigned topic after each class. Discussion of the results and observed regularities is also part of the activity.
LECTURE
The lecture series ends with a written assessment in the form of a test containing open and technically closed questions.
The basis for passing the course is obtaining more than 50% of points from a series of exercises and a written test.
