Biology of the Cell 1400-1BO13
Lecture explains intra- and extracellular processes as well as interactions between different cell types in multicellular organisms, which allow sustaining the equilibrium of cell and of the whole organism.
Program:
1. Basic concepts In cell biology, techniques of cell biology.
2. Molecular composition of the cell - nucleic acids, proteins, sugars, lipids and others.
3. Overall characteristic of pro- and eukaryotic cells (cell number, shape, size, organization); types of cell in multicellular organisms - structure and function.
4. Cellular oranelles - structure and function: plasma membrane and internal membrane system (Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, rybosomes), cytoskeleton, intra-cellular connections, nucleus, nucleolus, mitochondrion, lysosome, peroxisome, proteasome, inclusions.
5. Fundamental intracellular processes: membrane potential, transport accros cell membrane (diffusion, osmosis, filtration), intracellular signal transduction, exo- and endocytosis, DNA replication, transcription, translation, intracellular transport, cellular respiration, cellular digestion, protein degradation.
6. Cell division and differentiation: mitosis, meiosis, intracellular signaling, cell differentiation, cell senescence and death (necrosis, apoptosis); stem cells.
7. "Sick" cell: influence of external factors (physical, chemical, biological) on the cell homeostasis; mutagenesis; carcinogenesis.
