Organic Chemistry IB 1200-1CHOR1B3
Lecture
The course discusses the properties, methods of preparation, and reactivity (with particular emphasis on reaction mechanisms) of organic compounds with specific functional groups, in particular: alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, dienes, aromatic compounds, alcohols, phenols, ethers, epoxides, organosulfur compounds, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, nitriles, and amines. Additional topics include electrocyclic reactions, transformations of aromatic compounds, and selected consequences of molecular conformation.
Seminars
The student-led course discusses the properties of organic compounds, their stereochemistry, reaction mechanisms, and simple synthetic transformations.
Estimated student workload per semester: 207 hours, including:
lecture attendance: 45 hours
seminar attendance: 45 hours
consultations with the instructor: 27 hours
test preparation: 45 hours
exam preparation: 45 hours

Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course students should have basic knowledge of the fundamentals of organic chemistry.
KNOWLEDGE: After completing the course, the student knows and understands
K_W08
at an advanced level organic chemistry and biochemistry: nomenclature, structure of organic compounds, chemical reactions, reaction mechanisms, methods of preparation, occurrence, and applications. They understand the importance of chemical phenomena in processes occurring in living nature.
in particular:
knows the basic classes of organic compounds resulting from the division into functional groups, and their characteristic properties and reactions
SKILLS: After completing the course, the student is able
K_U08
to analyze problems in organic chemistry, including investigating the mechanisms of organic reactions. They are able to synthesize selected organic compounds. They are able to separate mixtures of selected organic compounds and purify the obtained components.
in particular:
using examples, explain the reactivity of basic classes of organic compounds using reaction mechanisms, and plan simple syntheses.
Assessment criteria
Lecture
Attendance at the lecture is mandatory, three absences are allowed.
A written exam is required at the end of the lecture. Admission to the exam will be conditional upon passing the seminars.
Seminars
Seminars will be graded based on attendance (two unexcused absences from class will result in a failure) and ten midterm tests.
A total of 100 points can be obtained from the tests, 50 points will be passed.
Students with sick leave registered with the Dean's Office will be allowed to take one midterm test they missed due to illness on an additional date (at the end of the semester). This date should be arranged individually with the instructor in charge of the given group.
Students who score a minimum of 80 points (a grade of 4.5 or 5.0) in the midterms will be exempt from the exam (with the same grade as the pre-seminars).
Students who do not score the required 50 points or wish to improve their grade will be allowed to take a make-up exam covering the entire material. The score on the make-up exam does not exempt them from the exam.
Practical placement
