Contactology clinic 1100-3BO24
Lighting techniques and slit lamp operation
Assessment of the anterior segment of the eye before applying contact lenses
Recording the condition of the anterior segment of the eye (tear film, assessment of the condition of the eyelids and eyelashes, bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva, cornea and iris condition, assessment of the depth of the anterior chamber using the van Herick method, assessment of the ocular lens)
Contact lens application - each student must be able to apply and remove the lens to both the patient and himself (learning manipulation). The student learns the proper care system for contact lenses and must be able to provide information regarding the use of contact lenses by the patient.
Learning to assess the fit of a contact lens at the slit lamp - both spherical and multifocal lenses as well as toric lenses, along with observing the markers and noting the value of the occurring rotation.
Use of ophthalmic dyes (fluorescein, lissamine green). Observation of the tear film disruption time, defects in the corneal epithelium, conjunctival damage with particular emphasis on LWE (lid wiper epitheliopathy), observation of the Marx line, observation of the condition of the palpebral conjunctiva for GPC (giantpapillary conjunctivitis)
Turning the upper eyelid to observe the condition of the eyelid and meibomian glands, but also as a skill needed in the event of a contact lens getting under the upper eyelid.
Selection of lens power (VD conversion) and selection of the appropriate lens and care system
Assessment of the refractive state in the applied lens correction (overrefraction, checking the state of arousal vision, assessment of near vision)
The role of a follow-up visit - learning how to conduct a follow-up visit and deal with typical problems related to both dry eyes and fitting parameters and vision in a given lens.
Prerequisites (description)
Course coordinators
Learning outcomes
Ability to operate a slit lamp and apply lighting techniques
Ability to observe and record the condition of the anterior segment of the eye
Ability to assess the depth of the anterior chamber (van Herick method)
Ability to apply contact lenses and provide information to the patient regarding methods of inserting and removing lenses as well as care systems and proper use of contact lenses.
Ability to assess lens fit (mobility, centration and, in the case of a toric lens, lens rotation)
Ability to use ophthalmic dyes
The ability to turn the upper eyelid
Ability to select the correct refractive parameters of a contact lens
Ability to specify the power of the inserted lens (overrefraction)
Ability to conduct a follow-up visit and make appropriate recommendations in response to problems occurring during contact lens use
Assessment criteria
Preparation of four reports in the field of:
lighting technician
ophthalmic dyes
toric lenses and stabilization systems
manual for use and care of contact lenses
Development of an optometric examination card for contact lens application
Applying contact lenses to three patients and presenting the completed examination card with recommendations for the patient regarding further actions
