Poland – Ukraine: History, Politics and Mutual Perceptions 3700-AL-PUHPM-OG
The primary objective of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the historical and contemporary dynamics between Poland and Ukraine within the backdrop of Russian aggression. Throughout the course, we will explore how Poles and Ukrainians presently interpret the difficult chapters of their shared history, and the underlying reasons for the disparities in their historical perspectives.
We will scrutinize the prevailing mutual stereotypes between Poles and Ukrainians, tracing their origins and observing how they have evolved over recent decades. We will examine how Polish and Ukrainian historians deal with the sensitive issue of the massacres of Poles in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia. Additionally, we will analyze the contemporary significance of the Volhynia massacre within the collective memory of both Ukraine and Poland.
Furthermore, we will approach the controversial topic of national heroes in Poland and Ukraine, exploring the interplay of mutual perceptions and the construction of historical myths. We will undertake a critical examination of the ongoing process of decommunization in Ukraine, and its implications for memory policy within the broader context of Poland-Ukraine relations. Through these discussions, we aim to foster a nuanced understanding of the historical narratives and contemporary challenges that shape the relationship between Poland and Ukraine.
During the course, we will also explore the perceptions of ordinary citizens toward each other in both countries and examine the roles that elites in Poland and Ukraine play in the process of reconciliation. We will investigate how history is presented and taught in both nations, considering the various methods and narratives employed.
We will also analyze the significant challenges facing the Polish-Ukrainian dialogue in contemporary times, as well as the impact of Ukrainian revolutions and Russian aggression on historical debates, and how these events continue to influence the discourse. We will discuss the distinctions between the concepts of nationalism and patriotism in both countries.
Students will have the opportunity to engage in independent research, exploring Ukraine-Polish relations through various lenses based on their individual interests and preferences.
