Centrum Prawa Angielskiego (British Law Centre) - Diploma in English Law & Legal Skills ("DELLS") 2200-1X001
The British Law Centre (“BLC”) is a project run by an educational organization ("Juris Angliae Scientia") based at Cambridge University, Faculty of Law. It has been teaching at UW WPiA since 1992. It offers a 1-year Diploma in English Law & Legal Skills (“DELLS”).
COURSE CONTENT:
The DELLS course includes the following law and legal skills:
• SUBSTANTIVE LAW: Constitutional law; Contract law; Tort law; Trusts.
• LEGAL SKILLS: Oral Advocacy and Public Speaking; Legal Writing; Negotiating; Contract Drafting; Litigation Skills.
• OPTIONAL EXTRAS: Commercial Awareness workshops, Mooting, Debating and other optional skills are available if students volunteer.

CALENDAR:
• The Diploma course starts in October and ends in June.
• Students have 14 weeks of lectures (in each lecture week, there is a lecture Mon-Fri, so 7.5hrs of lectures in total per lecture week)
• Students have 14 weeks of small-group, interactive classes (1 x 90-min "tutorial" and 1 x 90-min "seminar" in each class week - so 3hrs in total per class week).
• Lectures and classes happen in different weeks, to create less pressure on students’ timetables.
• Optional, additional classes and lectures are available to those who wish to volunteer for extra-curricular events.
• In summary, in any given week students have either 3hrs study (during class weeks) or 7.5hrs per week (in lecture weeks)

TEACHERS:
• The course is taught in English by experienced native-speaker academics and legal practitioners, including lecturers from Cambridge University, the UK Supreme Court, the CJEU and other renowned legal organizations.

ASSESSMENT
• Students complete 4 written assignments during the course.
• Extensive feedback is provided, to help improve legal writing and analytical skills.

Efekty kształcenia
After completing the course, students have greatly improved skills and knowledge about:
• a wide range of English law issues;
• legal research and analysis
• applying English law to real-life situations;
• English legal language (oral and written)
• persuasion (oral and written)
• negotiating
• drafting
The Diploma is dual-certified by (i) UW WPiA and (ii) Juris Angliae Scientia – an educational project based at Cambridge University, Faculty of Law.
BLC Graduates have gone on to illustrious careers in:
• legal practice (both in Poland and abroad);
• academia (inc. at Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, Yale etc.);
• international institutions (inc. high-profile positions at the EU and multiple judges and Advocates General at the CJEU);
• national/international judiciaries.
Kryteria oceniania
From October-June, students complete 4 written assignments, as follows:
• each assignment is max. 2,000 words;
• one assignment per module for: constitutional law, contract law, tort law, trusts law
• 30-days given to complete each assignment
• lengthy time distances between completing each assignment;
• 2 separate dates and attempts are possible to pass each assignment;
• designed to help practice legal analysis and writing skills taught on DELLS;
• minimum pass grade of 40% per assignment
• overall grade average only takes into account the ‘best 3’ assignment grades
• possibility to complete assignments in next academic year if necessary
• ongoing practice of writing/analysis skills, during classes and lectures
Literatura
DELLS uses written and digital materials prepared especially for the course by expert academics and lawyers.
In addition to lectures and classes at UW WPiA, students can access a database of online lectures and workshops delivered by leading academics (inc. from Cambridge and Oxford Universities), legal practitioners and judges (inc. from the UK's Supreme Court and the Court of Justice of the EU).
