Regionalism in the Baltic-Black Sea Region 2100-ERASMUS-RBBS
This course explores the geopolitical, economic, and cultural dynamics of
regionalism within the Baltic-Black Sea Region, a strategically significant area connecting
Northern, Central and Eastern Europe. The course examines the historical roots and
contemporary developments of regional cooperation and integration among countries in this
region, including Northern European States (Sweden, Finland and Denmark), Baltic States
(Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), Central and Eastern European countries (Poland, Ukraine,
Moldova, Belarus), and the Black Sea States (Turkey, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia).
Key topics include the impact of historical legacies on regional cooperation, the role of
international organisations and alliances such as the EU, NATO, and the Eastern Partnership.
The course also addresses contemporary challenges, including security threats, energy policy,
and economic cooperation.
Students will engage with theoretical frameworks of regionalism, case studies, and policy
analysis to understand the complexities of regional integration and cooperation in this area.
The course will also explore the role of national identity, minority issues, and cultural ties in
shaping regional dynamics.
By the end of this course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the
geopolitical, economic, and cultural factors driving regionalism in the Baltic-Black Sea
Region. They will be equipped to critically analyse the role of international organisations,
external powers, and historical legacies in shaping regional dynamics, and assess
contemporary challenges and opportunities for cooperation in this strategically significant
area.
