French language teaching methodology for secondary schools 4100-IIMDPFRA
During the classes on subject didactics for the third educational stage, emphasis is placed on preparing students to work with young people by equipping them with knowledge and skills related to conveying, updating, and organizing knowledge, skills, and competencies appropriate to the requirements of upper-secondary education. An equally important goal is to foster a value system that allows for full professional independence in the future. A key skill is the ability to learn independently, develop, and enhance one's competencies. The course also focuses on developing skills such as independent and critical thinking, flexibility in one's perspective and viewpoint of reality, as well as an awareness of the principles of teacher work ethics.
The following topics are discussed within the course:
The role of foreign language learning at the third educational stage. The core curriculum for general education at the third educational stage. Educational goals and content of foreign language teaching at the third educational stage.
The specifics and regularities of learning at the third educational stage. Cognitive and social changes during adolescence and their impact on learning styles.
The lesson. The formal structure of the lesson as a didactic unit for older students. Lesson planning. Formulating lesson objectives and selecting teaching content for older students.
The role of the foreign language teacher at the third educational stage. Interactions between students and teachers during lessons. Stimulating students' cognitive activity, creating didactic situations, and guiding students' work.
Forms of work. Organization of classroom work, social forms of work. Individualization of teaching. Homework.
Selecting teaching methods for older students. Fostering a positive attitude toward learning among students, as well as developing curiosity, activity, and independent cognitive skills. Shaping motivation to learn a foreign language, as well as habits of systematic studying and utilizing various sources of knowledge and communication channels.
Designing the material environment of the lesson. Organizing the classroom space. Teaching aids: textbooks, educational packages, and teaching resources – selection and utilization.
Evaluating students' work outcomes. Assessment and its types. Functions of assessment.
Developing students' predispositions and talents. Shaping attitudes and practical skills, as well as problem-solving abilities and knowledge application.
Educational situations in the course of foreign language teaching. Developing students' personal and social skills. Fostering collaboration skills among students. Building a value system and developing students' ethical attitudes. Shaping communication competencies and cultural habits.
Collaboration between teachers and students' parents, school staff, and the community.

Knowledge: the graduate knows and understands
- chosen facts, theories, institutions, processes, and phenomena related to the field of studies teaching french language which have practical application in teaching foreign languages at the third educational stage (K_W01)

- the purpose, organization, legal basis and functioning of educational, institutions (K_W08)
- various participants involved in educational, inclusive education and ways of implementing the principle of inclusion (K_W09)
- the learners (recipients of educational services) and the methods of diagnosing their needs and assessing the quality of educational services (K_W11)
- the legal and financial aspect of teaching institutions, particularly those involved in foreign language teaching or teaching social studies (K_W12)

Skills: the graduate is able to :
- individually plan and implement, using also communication and information techniques, typical and innovative projects connected with teaching French language in secondary schools, vocational schools (K_U02)
- evaluate and conduct a critical analysis of the quality of French language teaching, diagnose the needs, abilities and potential of every learner, as well as design and implement individually tailored teaching and educational programs (K_U03)
- apply the assumptions and requirements of the core curriculum for teaching French at the third educational stage (K_U04)
- apply, to the necessary extent, the law relating to educational institutions, involving the teaching of French (K_U06)
- assess the suitability of a variety of methods, procedures and best practices, and select and apply the appropriate approach with the goal of accomplishing tasks and solving problems related to French language teaching (K_U07)
- use theories in psychology, pedagogy and education, and other related disciplines to critically analyse and interpret educational and social issues , as well as understand the motives and patterns of human behaviour (K_U08)
- work with teenagers from various cultural backgrounds and those with limited knowledge of the Polish language (K_U10)
- apply ethical standards in all of the activities undertaken, identify and analyse ethical dilemmas in the educational aspects of their profession (K_U11)
- formulate and test hypotheses to conduct a critical analysis of their own actions and identify possible areas for change in the future (K_U12)
- use their knowledge – formulate and solve complex and untypical problems and perform tasks in an innovative manner in unpredictable conditions through adapting existing methods and tools or creating new ones (K_U13)
- using their well-developed organisational skills, plan and carry out tasks related to the teaching French language at the third educational stage (K_U24)
- perform the various roles required for working as a team, is willing to accept and assign tasks, and possesses the organisational skills necessary in designing and implementing professional educational activities; can act as a team leader (K_U25)

Assessment criteria
Assessment for Grading
The basis for assessment is:
a) Attendance in classes (students are allowed two absences per semester)
b) Preparation for classes (including reading selected articles from specified educational journals): 30%
c) Active participation in classes (including participation in discussions, simulations of lesson segments, thematic presentations): 30%
d) Successful completion of the oral final exam: 30%
