English for civics 4100-1SJASDWOSO
During the course, which lasts the three semesters, students deepen their knowledge of the basic issues related to civics taught as a CLIL subject in a primary school, at the second educational stage.
The main emphasis is placed on the acquisition of methods effective in teaching civics in English.
Topics discussed in the first semester:
- nationality, citizenship, various faces of patriotism
- national and ethnic minorities
- discrimination
- civic skills and virtues
- non-governmental organizations
- Poles abroad
Topics discussed in the second semester:
- international organizations (i.e. NATO, European Union, UN)
- international courts and tribunals
- Human Rights Ombudsman
- media and advertisements
Topics discussed in the third semester:
- national policy and functioning of the state
- the Sejm and the Senate
- the office of the President
- legislative process
- local self-government
The course ends with an exam after three semesters.
Only students who pass all three semesters of the course are eligible to take part in the exam.
The exam is conducted both in an oral and written form.

The graduate knows and understands:
S_W01: to an advanced degree, selected facts, theories, institutions, processes and phenomena related to linguistics, relevant to the field of studies - teaching foreign languages, which have practical application in foreign language teaching at the second educational stage
S_W03: the methods, norms, procedures and standards of good practice in educational institutions, related to teaching foreign languages
S_W09: the methodology to perform common tasks; the standards and procedures used in various educational areas
The graduate is able to:
S_U01: search, analyse, evaluate, select and use information, using a variety of sources and methods, in Polish and English
S_U02: plan and implement projects typical for foreign language teaching environments
S_U05: observe and assess the suitability of a variety of methods, procedures and best practices, and select and apply the appropriate approach with the goal of accomplishing tasks and solving problems related to foreign language teaching
S_U09: analyse their own actions and identify possible areas for change in the future
S_U10: work with children from various cultural backgrounds and those with limited knowledge of the Polish language
S_U12: communicate in Polish and in English, using a variety of channels and techniques, with all participants in the teaching-learning process as well as experts in those academic disciplines and subjects that are relevant to their field of studies
S_U13: prepare written work in both Polish and in English, relevant to the field of studies, on specific issues, using basic theoretical approaches and a variety of sources
S_U14: prepare, and deliver in public, oral presentations in Polish and in English, on specific issues, using basic theoretical approaches, as well as a variety of sources
S_U15: speak and write consistently and precisely in Polish and in English on topics related to selected educational matters, applying different theoretical approaches and using findings from academic disciplines relevant to their course of studies
The graduate is prepared to:
S_K01: pursue lifelong learning
S_K02: reflect on the level of their skills and knowledge, constantly develop professionally and personally, self-assess their competences, improve their skills, plan their development and training
S_K05: interact and work in a group, performing various roles
Assessment criteria
The subject ends with a grade.
One of the prerequisites for obtaining the final grade is presence and active participation in classes.
One absence per semester is allowed.
The final grade is the combination of:
- presentation in a classroom
- vocabulary tests
- tasks and assignments done in class and at home, completed individually or in groups on Kampus platform
