History of the contemporary Mediterranean region 4018-WYK22Z
Lectures on the contemporary history of the Mediterranean, i.e. the region’s history from the Napoleonic era to current events.
The classes are divided into thematic blocks arranged in chronological order or by subject. The course starts with a brief introduction to the history of the Mediterranean up to the 18th century. The presented issues will make it easier for students from different courses of studies, who represent various levels of basic knowledge on Mediterranean history, to understand the processes occurring in the 19th and 20th centuries. The introduction will be followed by a presentation of Mediterranean history in the 19th and 20th centuries in a comparative approach in relation to the 18th century. Next will be thematic blocks arranged either strictly chronologically (the Mediterranean during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars, the Mediterranean and the order of the Congress of Vienna, the opening of the Suez Canal, the Mediterranean and World War I, the Mediterranean in the two inter-war decades, the Mediterranean and World War II, the Mediterranean and the disintegration of the bipolar system), or in a longer timeline linked to a given issue (the British road to India - the British Empire; the decadence of the Ottoman Empire - the independence of Greece; Italy - from disintegration through unification to colonial expansion; the Mediterranean during the Cold War - decolonization).
Each year the lectures are based on the teacher’s ongoing research. This means that a large part of the detailed knowledge conveyed to students can change. Whereas the core material, or fundamental knowledge the students need to acquire, remains the same, new elements illustrating various processes are introduced on the basis of research. This means that this monographic lecture series can, for example, be taken for two years in a row, as happened with several students of Mediterranean Studies in the previous two academic years.

Assessment criteria
Credits will be awarded based on attendance and a possible final test (for a mark); allowable absences - 2 per semester.
