Ancient greek - intermediate group 4018-LEK-SGR1FN
During the course students will:
- supplement and expand their knowledge of Ancient Greek grammar
- expand their vocabulary
- learn about selected topics from Ancient Greek culture (literature, philosophy, art, daily life, mentality of the Ancient Greeks) on the basis of source texts without the mediation of a translation
- translate and analyse longer Ancient Greek texts
Knowledge on the structure and vocabulary of Ancient Greek makes learning Modern Greek easier (rules of orthography, vocabulary)
1. Verbs:
- conjugation I (indicativus, imperfectum, infinitivus of thematic aorist II activi and medii, aorist I and II passivi; participium aoristi II activi and medii, aoristi I and II passivi; futurum passivum; indicativus imperfecti, root aorist infinitivus and participium)
- conjugation II (praesens and imperfectum activi and medii-passivi, futurum activi and medii, aorists)
- optativus (complete conjugation),
- coniunctivus (complete conjugation),
- perfectum and plusquamperfectum (complete conjugation),
- the verb oida.
2. Adiectiva verbalia.
3. Nouns:
– declension III:
– basileus type,
– nouns with –ις, -υ,
– the nouns meter, pater, aner and gyne, bous, naus,
4. Adjectives:
– adjectives with –ης, -ες; -υς, -εια, -υ;
– comparison of adjectives (regular,
root, irregular).
5. Comparison of adverbs.
6. Cardinal and ordinal numbers.
– declension of the numerals 1-4.
7. Pronouns
– revision (personal, interrogative [τίς, τί], indefinite
[τις, τι], indicative (hode, houtos, ekeinos, autos),
supplementary information.
8. Syntax:
– accusativus relationis,
– genetivus comparationis,
– genetivus partitivus;
– optativus in main and subordinate clauses,
– coniunctivus in main and subordinate clauses,
– conditionals.
9. Translating excerpts from Aesop, Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, Thucydides, Lysias, Isaeus, Aelian, Chariton of Aphrodisias, Heliodorus, Callimachus, etc.

- elementary knowledge on Ancient Greek inflection and syntax (Attican dialect)
- an elementary Ancient Greek vocabulary
- basic knowledge on selected issues of Ancient Greek history and culture
SKILLS:
- translating simple Ancient Greek texts with a dictionary
- analysing translated texts with the help of basic knowledge on Ancient Greek culture
- comparing selected phenomena of Ancient Greek inflection and syntax with corresponding phenomena in Modern Greek
- identifying ancient roots in Modern Greek vocabulary and in the Polish language, at a basic level
SOCIAL COMPETENCES:
- awareness of the limited scope of their knowledge and the need for continual learning
- organizing their own work
