Latin - beginner group 4018-LEK-L0
The classes aim to teach students to understand simple Latin texts, show them the huge impact of Latin on contemporary languages (especially the Romance languages), and expand their knowledge on the history and culture of ancient Greece and Rome.
Written test.
I. During the classes students will learn about Latin inflection and syntax as well as basic vocabulary needed for further linguistic studies, and will expand their knowledge on the history and culture of ancient Greece and Rome.
II. Planned material:
- history of Latin, pronunciation and rules for accentuation
- declensions I-V (nouns, adjectives, exceptions)
- indicativus activi and passivi praesentis, imperfecti, futuri I, indicativus perfecti, plusquamperfecti, futuri II activi, imperativus praesentis activi and passivi, infinitivus praesentis activi and passivi, infinitivus perfecti activi conjugation I-IV and the word esse and its compounds as well as irregular verbs
- pronouns: personal, possessive, indicative (a selection), relative
- the functions of the cases: genetivus partitivus, dativus possessivus, ablativus auctoris, ablativus temporis, ablativus loci, ablativus comparationis, nominativus and accusativus duplex
- the ACI structure (praesens activi and passivi, perfectum activi)
- verba defectiva
- comparison of adjectives and adverbs
- gerundivum, gerundium
- reading Latin texts appropriate for the students’ skills

Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
- basic knowledge on the place of Latin among the Indo-European languages and its importance for the development of modern languages and contemporary scientific disciplines
- basic knowledge on the structures and vocabulary of ancient Latin enabling identification of Latin roots in scientific terminology and work with texts by ancient authors
Skills:
- efficiently using dictionaries, grammar books and all kinds of auxiliary materials
- translating simple texts from Latin to Polish
Social competences:
- being aware of the limited scope of one’s knowledge and skills
- understanding the need for continual learning and upgrading professional competence, especially by improving language skills; flexibly defining the directions of one’s personal development
Assessment criteria
Students’ active participation in classes may (or may not) be rewarded with a very good mark; regarding tests during the course, to receive a pass mark students have to obtain at least 60% of the points.
