The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the basics of modern information technology, especially the internet. The following topics will be addressed during the course:
1. The architecture of the internet. Communication protocols - how the internet works and what one has to know about it.
2. Internet security. Password strength and safety issues. Typical vulnerabilities, attacks and countermeasures.
3. Data storing and exchange. File transfer protocols, cloud storage.
4. Network communication. Synchronous and asynchronous communication protocols. E-mail, internet messengers. Social networks. Privacy and safety in social networks and internet communication.
5. Searching for data in the internet. Using search tools and internet encyclopediae (Google, Wikipedia). "Deep" resource search, multiple source verification. Critical data analysis.
6. Own presence in the internet: creating and maintaining one's own website, using available site creation tools, blogging platforms. HTML language basics.
7. Data editing, manipulation and presentation fundamentals: using word processors, spreadsheets and presentation tools. Chosing among available tools (MS Office, LibreOffice, Google Docs), compatibility issues.

Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the students will:
- know the basics of how the internet functions
- know how to create a simple website and host it in the internet
- know basic data search, manipulation and presentation tools
- recognize the issues concerning internet safety and privacy
- be able to find resources in the internet using various sources and critically verify them
- be able to communicate in various ways using the internet
Assessment criteria
Students will be asked to solve tests related to the current topic and occasionally to perform graded tasks pertaining to the lectures.
At the end of the course, students' knowledge will be verified in a practical manner: participants will be asked to create a website of their own on a platform of their choice, using the knowledge and abilities gained during the course.
