History of Polish Philosophy I 3800-HFP123-M
The lecture presents main ideas, doctrines, trends and schools of the Polish philosophical tradition from the Middle Ages to positivism. The lecture discuss the following issues (i.a.): philosophy in Poland before establishing of the university in Krakow; scholastic philosophy of the 15th century; Renaissance philosophical and political thought (A. F. Modrzewski, S. Orzechowski); philosophical thought of the 17th century (Sebastian Petrycy of Pilzno, religious and social philosophy of Arianism-Socinianism); philosophical thought in the era of Polish Enlightenment (metaphysics of the „physical and moral order”, doctrines of H. Kołłątaj, S. Staszic, J. Śniadecki); philosophical thought of Polish Romanticism, including speculative systems of „national philosophy” and messianism (M. Mochnacki, B. Trentowski, A. Cieszkowski, K. Libelt, J. M. Hoene-Wroński); Warsaw positivism and critical positivism (J. Ochorowicz, A. Mahrburg).

Learning outcomes
- students have knowledge of the most important achievements in the history of Polish philosophical thought from the Middle Ages to positivism;
- students know the basic research methods and argumentation strategies used in medieval and modern Polish philosophy;
- students understand the historical nature of the formation of philosophical ideas and the historical changeability of language meanings;
- students understand the role of philosophical reflection in shaping culture;
- students detect the relationship between the formation of philosophical ideas and social and cultural processes;
- students are ready to identify their knowledge and skills in the field of the history of Polish philosophy from the Middle Ages to positivism
Assessment criteria
Assessment based on a written work (on a selected topic discussed during the lecture).
