Plato’s view of world. 3700-CS1-FAK-WSP-OG
A selection of Plato's dialogues will be discussed in this semester's class, and students will be introduced to methods of interpretation. The selection of texts includes dialogues included in Plato's early, middle and late works. Each class will be dedicated to a particular dialogue, during which the participants will become familiar with the problems of the texts their terminology, the method of heuresis. The classes are oriented towards the application of the learned content to the study and understanding of contemporary culture and its active co-creation.
Familiarisation with Plato's epistemology and ethics, the construction and structure of discourse, myths and symbols will allow the students to consolidate the content of the dialogues and to recognise the Platonic tradition in literary and cultural texts of later periods. An integral part of the reading of the dialogues and analysis will be to relate their issues to contemporary culture.
The essential method of work in the course is the reading of source texts in Polish translations. There will also be elements of Plato's original Greek concepts and studies by authors who provide an introduction to the reading of Plato (W. Lutoslawski, A. Krokiewicz W. K. C. Guthrie, T. A Szlezák, G. Vlastos and others).
